The 1856995 fan clutch is a thermostatic engine cooling fan drive designed for Scania heavy duty trucks. It rotates freely at low temperatures when cooling is not required, allowing the engine to warm up faster and reducing unnecessary engine load. As temperature increases, the viscous clutch engages and the fan is driven by engine power to circulate air and cool the engine effectively.

On a cold engine that has not been started that day, forcefully turn the fan by hand. If the fan rotates more than five times freely, the clutch may be faulty. You should feel some resistance, and the fan should rotate no more than three times depending on ambient temperature.
