It rotates freely at low temperatures when cooling is not required, allowing the engine to warm up faster and reducing unnecessary engine load. On a cold engine that has not been started that day, forcefully turn the fan by hand. If the fan rotates more than five times freely, the clutch may be faulty. You should feel some resistance, and the fan should rotate no more than three times depending on ambient temperature.
